Welcome to ASIJ High School Counseling
Our counselors are all committed to sharing learning and social strategies to help students meet academic demands and deal with any social pressures they may face. Should a student be feeling overwhelmed with classes, a social situation or any other pressure, we're here for them. While students may at times be tentative to discuss personal matters with the counselor who may be writing their college recommendation, they shouldn't be. In fact, the more we get to know a student, the better we can help them when they get to the college process. We're here to help in any way we can.
Each year, another amazing group of ASIJ graduates enroll in colleges and universities throughout the globe. This milestone is the culmination of a multiyear journey of self-reflection and identifying colleges that meet their goals and interests. Throughout the process, each student works one-on-one with a counselor who supports him or her in navigating the complexities of highly selective admissions. Students are at the heart of all what the ASIJ counselors do, and paramount is ensuring that each student presents the strongest applications possible and enrolls at a school where he or she will thrive.
A professional team: Our four counselors’ expertise is drawn from decades of collective counseling experience at ASIJ, in admissions offices at colleges, and other well-regarded independent schools’ counseling offices. Every year, our counselors travel across the country and globe to visit schools and conferences, network with college admission officers, learn of new opportunities, and advocate for our ASIJ students.
Access to Counselors: Students are encouraged to meet with their counselors formally, through scheduled meetings, and informally by simply dropping in. Parents are also encouraged to communicate with counselors through email, phone calls, and, of course, in person meetings. The students are put on a schedule with regards to the college process so even if they don’t feel inclined to come in on their own, we will reach out to them.
Access to college representatives: Our students have opportunities to meet with more than 100 college admission officers that ASIJ hosts on our campus each year. In small gatherings, students can personally connect with college representatives. At the same time, the reps are gaining a close-up view of ASIJ’s rigorous academics and the strong character and capabilities of our student body. In addition, students and families learn firsthand about the nuances of highly selective admissions at special events at ASIJ featuring admission officers.
Keeping families in the loop: We recognize that the college search and admissions process is something that affects everyone in a family. Parents of students in receive frequent updates about our scheduled programs, admissions developments and strategies via regularly scheduled presentations, events with college admissions representatives and frequent email contact.
